“This professorship in jazz performance helps us attract outstanding faculty members who will raise the calibre of the university’s jazz program to a higher level and attract more fine students along the way.  It helps our jazz studies program flourish and helps our students reach for the stars.”

“Our family’s range of interests in the University of Manitoba is represented in many areas, but given Izzy’s love of music and of jazz in particular, I wanted to support this new and flourishing aspect of the Marcel. A. Desautels Faculty of Music.”

Babs Asper Professorship in Jazz Performance

In 2008, The Asper Foundation donated $1 million to establish the Babs Asper Professorship in Jazz Performance in the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. This support enabled the University of Manitoba to become one of the first universities in Canada to offer a Bachelor of Jazz Studies degree. It is the first endowed Music Professorship in the history of the University of Manitoba that bears Babs Asper’s name. University of Manitoba Faculty of Music professor and jazz trumpeter Derrick Gardner presently holds this position. For more information, please see here.
